All you Need to Know About Buying Antique Mirrors

If you are looking to acquire an antique mirror or two, there is much to consider. There are many so-called antique mirrors and sorting the real items from the replicas can be a challenge, especially if you have limited knowledge of antiques in general. From around the 17thcentury, mirrors with elegantly carved frames were the exclusive property of the very wealthy aristocrats, and such mirrors can cost a small fortune. The most important aspect is being able to identify a genuine antique piece, and with that in mind, here are a few important things to look for when searching for antique mirrors.

* Mirror Frames – Typically, the frame of an antique mirror would be made from wood, and expect to see signs of wear and tear. If the frame is in near perfect condition, it is unlikely to be a genuine antique. The backing of an antique mirror is normally made from timber and it might have a signature of the maker, which is something to look for. If you are experimenting with blending the old and the new, why not try an antique mirror on a stand? There are online antique dealers who can source just about any antique, and they have an extensive network of colleagues, which makes sourcing specific pieces much easier.

* Check for Screws – In the event that the mirror has screws, remove one if at all possible, as antique screws were all handmade, very often the slot is not centrally placed. The thread of the screw might also be imperfect, which is another good indicator that the mirror is a genuine antique.

* Imperfections in the Glass – Everything was done by hand when antique mirrors were made, and sometimes the glass finish is slightly imperfect. This might include a slightly wavy surface or possibly small bubbles, and if the mirror was made with a thin mercury sheet, there could be cloud spots on the mirror surface. If you would like some further reading on how to assess the value of an old mirror, you can check out various guides online.

* Look at the Thickness of the Mirror – Modern mirrors use a thinner pane of glass than antiques, so the antique mirror would typically be much heavier. One way to tell is to lay a key on the surface of the mirror, with the genuine antique, the reflection will be very close to the key while doing this with a modern mirror, the reflection would be further apart.

* The Glass Colour – If the mirror glass is completely colourless, this is not a good sign, as an antique mirror would have a tint of grey or yellow, due to the passage of time. If you are in the slightest doubt as to the authenticity of an antique mirror, you are well-advised to ask a dealer to evaluate the piece.

* If your home is a contemporary setting, an antique mirror is a perfect feature to blend with a modern look, and by dealing with an online antique dealer, you can be sure that the mirror is, in fact, a genuine antique.

A Saint Louis Dilemma: Who To Root For In The Super Bowl

Hello, Elegant Lovelies,

Hope you are having a wonderful weekend. Temperatures in Missouri were in the negative range early in the week and now is supposed to be almost 60 degrees this weekend. Oh my!

If you ask my hubby I am not watching 24/7 football, however, that Prince halftime show was and continues to be priceless. Everyone knows whether a football fan or not that this is Super Bowl weekend and the ever-determined Patriots versus. the strong bucking Rams. I go over and over in my head that the Rams were in St. Louis, Missouri for twenty years and the only Super Bowl win was while in the Gateway City. In this post in Sports Illustrated by Joan Niesen, “St. Louis’s Super Bowl: Confusion About the Rams-and Contempt for Stan Kroenke” says that most St. Louisans want to just not even bother but that’s not everyone. I have some friends who don’t care about Kroenke’s antics and have gone to California to watch live and in person at the Coliseum.

In 2014, JT met then Rams players Corey Harkey (left) and Cody Davis (right) at a Lady Rams event.

I know even though Kroenke was born and raised in Missouri, space and money is the main focus of moving the Rams back to Los Angeles, California. The new stadium according to the Washington Post will cost approximately $5 Billion dollars that’s no chunk change. In the article by Liz Clarke, “The Rams’ $5 billion stadium complex is bigger than Disneyland. It might be perfect for L.A.,” the new stadium will cost megabucks.
“The surrounding multiuse development, which includes a 250,000-square-foot West Coast headquarters for NFL Media and the NFL Network, will be constructed in stages and drive the total project’s cost well over $5 billion.”

Money, Money, Money!
We want to say that money isn’t what it’s about and that it’s about the game. But we know, in today’s era of professional sports, that just isn’t the case.

With this year’s Super Bowl featuring the now Los Angeles Rams against the New England Patriots, a big dilemma has hit the people of Saint Louis. Who does one root for? Let’s look at it. The Rams won their first Super Bowl following the 1999 season. The Greatest Show on Turf was rolling high and the Rams were the talk of the NFL world. By the end of the 2001 season, the Rams were back in the Super Bowl, taking on the upstart New England Patriots, with a second-year quarterback by the name of Tom Brady. The Rams were a heavy favorite to win the game, but much to the surprise on many people, the Patriots came away victorious. This win by the Patriots propelled them into a string of Super Bowl appearances. In the last seventeen seasons, the Patriots have won five of the eight games they have played, with this year’s game being number nine.

The fact that New England defeated the Rams and their continued success has left many Saint Louisans feeling not so nice things about the Patriots. We know many people who would always cheer against Patriots whenever they were planning, especially in the Super Bowl.

And when Kroenke and the Rams left the Gateway City after the 2015 season, many Saint Louisans feel the burn of a money-hungry owner who allowed his team to hit rock bottom all the while demanding a new stadium for his team. While Saint Louis officials were planning to build a new stadium for Kroenke, he convinced the NFL League officials to approve the move back to Los Angeles while promising to build a sports and entertainment complex that would benefit the NFL as a whole. Officials overwhelmingly approved the move and Saint Louis was once again without a professional football team. Many Saint Louisans supported the Rams from day one and became true supporters and fans. If leaving Saint Louis for Los Angeles was not bad enough, but once they get back to Los Angeles, they start playing better, winning games and now back in the Super Bowl. Saint Louisians’ frustration and loathe for the Rams have now been taken to a higher level.

So here we are. February 2019. The Saint Louis, I mean the Los Angeles Rams are playing the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LIII. Who does one root for? The team that left our city for more opportunities and more money. Or the team that beat our then team back in 2002. I can honestly say, I don’t know. A colleague at work said he would be root for the team that ends up winning the game. Maybe so!

I would like to hear your thoughts and comments! Who are you rooting for? Do you even care? Are you more interested in the halftime show or the commercials? Or will you not be watching any of it and doing other things.

Let J and JT know in the comments below.

Techy Girl: DJI Osmo Mobile 2 (Product Review)

Hello, Elegant Lovelies!

I pray that your week has been an awesome one for you. We received an arctic blast that sent our temperatures below zero, -28 degrees wind chill to be exact. Time to bring out the faux fur coat. Nothing keeps you warm like faux fur, and it is only faux fur for me.

In addition to being a girly girl, I am also a techy girl. Whether it is the latest smartphone or new computer program, I enjoy using a variety of gadgets and the like and figuring them out. One of the latest gadgets that I had an opportunity to try was the DJI Osmo Mobile 2. Over the Christmas season, thanks to my partnership with Verizon Wireless, I was able to use this neat gizmo device.

DJI Osmo Mobile 2

Attach and sync your smartphone to the DJI Osmo Mobile and you are able to take better photographs and capture videos. The DJI has several features that can enhance your videos and your photographs. With ActiveTrack, the built-in sensors help you keep your target on track. The built-in zoom feature on the handle allows for smooth and seamless zooms without having to go your smartphone. The panoramic feature allows you to take multiple photographs at one time and then combines them together into one larger photograph.

Think of the selifes you can take or the YouTube videos you can capture. Or when you are on vacation and you want to take a video of the places you visit.

This is one of my YouTube videos that I recorded using the Google Pixel 3XL and the DJI Osmo Mobile 2.

In the past, I would have had my hubby capturing the video while I spoke. This time around I was able to do it myself.

It was fun learning how to use the DJI. But it took a little practice getting the smartphone into the holder and keeping it stable in order to capture the video. After working with it for a bit, I figured it out and I was all set to go. My hubby, on the other hand, didn’t like how when he would hold it straight the camera would move and that was a little frustrating. I had to show him how to balance the handle straight so the camera wouldn’t move. I don’t think this is a reason not to purchase the DJI Osmo Mobile 2, however, again it may take some practice.

In addition, the app has several new features that I spent some time exploring what they were and learning how to integrate them into the videos that I wanted to capture.

Whether it is just for fun or a part of a social media business that you operate, the device will provide you with better quality results than you can imagine. All it takes is a little time to practice using the device and learning the features of the app. Once you have mastered that, you will be all set and ready to go.

FTC Disclosure:
Verizon Wireless provided me with the DJI Osmo Mobile 2 for a period of six weeks to use the product and to write this review. I did not receive any monetary compensation to write this review and all opinions are strictly my own. At the end of the six weeks, the product was returned back to Verizon Wireless.
