3 Dog Behaviours to Watch Out For (And What They Mean)

Dogs are wonderful creatures and whether you have adopted a puppy who bounds around full of energy or you have an old dog who prefers to spend more time under his blanket, they are good communicators. They can give you a single glance and you know that they want you to ruffle their ears. Or sometimes they are even more direct than that. How many times has your dog brought you his lead as a clear instruction: you will take me for a walk now?

But sometimes, your dog isn’t just trying to get a tasty snack or persuade you to put some boots on and head out in the rain for a long walk up a muddy track. Sometimes, they are trying to tell you something much more important and you might not have recognised the signs.

There are three common symptoms that dogs display when something is wrong and while all of these symptoms can have multiple causes, if you act fast, you will be able to help treat your dog and return him to his normal self as soon as possible.

Here’s what you need to know:

Scratching = I Have Fleas!
When dogs get fleas, they feel itchy because the fleas live in their fur, lay eggs and bite. Just as we might scratch a mosquito bite, dogs are compelled to scratch flea bites. Cats and dogs share the same breed of flea, so if you see your cat scratching too, you definitely need to find a treatment soon for each pet and probably your house as well. Fleas are quite happy to bite you too.

One treatment brand, Advecta, is ideal because they don’t just make spot on treatments and shampoos for dogs, they also make sprays for indoors and in the yard to get rid of any fleas waiting to pounce. If your dog has a pale coat, you will usually be able to see flea dirt in his fur or even the brown fleas themselves. It takes a while to completely get rid of fleas, but you will be able to monitor the situation by gently combing his coat as you would comb a child’s hair for head lice.

Though every dog gets fleas once in awhile, you can also use topical preventative treatments to reduce the amount they occur. One of the best things you can do – and your dog or cat will love – is regular brushing with a flea comb. This will help to remove the odd flea and make sure it doesn’t have an opportunity to start breeding. You should also keep your home clean and vacuum regularly to suck up any fleas or eggs that may be left in the carpet. This is especially important when you know that you pets have fleas or have had them recently.

Sickness and Diarrhea = I’m Not Very Well
Cats throw up all the time to help get rid of any furballs collecting in their stomachs, but this behaviour is not so normal for dogs. When your dog is sick, you might not need to go to the vet, but you must keep any eye on him to make sure that his symptoms don’t get worse. If you know that your dog has eaten chocolate, go to the vet immediately to seek help. They will be able to make sure that all the chocolate is safely removed from his stomach (they make him more sick!) and they can also provide pills to help slow his pounding heart to a safer level.

Most of the time, though, your dog will just be a bit under the weather so let him sleep it off in his bed, letting him cover himself with a blanket if he likes. Your dog is probably best placed to know what he needs to do when he is sick, so if he doesn’t want to go for a walk, don’t make him. Just give him some time to recover quietly on his own in bed – just what you would want! Keep an eye on him and if you notice any signs that he is getting worse, or the symptoms last for longer than a day, take him to the vet for a check-up to be on the safe side.

When they are sick, dogs have a tendency to drink too much at once and this can make them sick all over again. The best thing to do is provide water little and often so that they don’t drink too much. If you are concerned about your tap water, the best idea is to boil it and then allow it to cool completely before presenting it to your dog to ensure that there is absolutely no bacteria in there.

Tiredness and Coughing = I Might Have Heartworm
There are lots of reasons for both of these symptoms, but you should always have them checked by a vet to make sure that they are not being caused by heartworm. This is a parasitic worm that lives in your dog’s heart and lungs and should be treated as soon as possible.

The good news is that you can help to prevent any instances of heartworm using a simple spot-on treatment, pill or injection. These treatments must be administered regularly, though, as they are ineffective on adult heartworms. Your vet should also carry out annual tests, just to be sure.

Your dog is really very good at telling you things and now you have a better idea of what he means, you can both be much happier together! The main thing to remember is that if you have any doubts about your dog’s health or behaviours, you should take him to see the vet, if only to settle your own worries.

Most dogs will get a bit poorly from time to time, just as we do, and it is usually nothing to worry about. Make sure you take all the usual precautions with preventative treatments for fleas and heartworm as well as the usual vaccinations. All being well, your dog will live a long and healthy life with you.

It’s National Cookie Day!

Good Evening Wonderful People!

Have you ever noticed that there is a holiday for everything. And today is no exception.
It is National Cookie Day!!

Cookies are one of my favorite treats, especially when they are homemade and for the holidays. Nothing completes a Christmas meal like a good homemade cookie.
Some of my favorites are chocolate chip and peanut butter.

The Peanut Butter Surprise Cookies

We featured the recipe for these peanut butter cookies last year and you can find it here!
They are super easy to make and super tasty.

We often look for  new recipes that are healthy, but still very tasty. We found these oatmeal raisin cookies that are made without sugar.

Raisin Oatmeal Cookies

Each year, we take part in a fast with our church family. During the fast, we do not eat any meat; but we also do have any sugar. These cookies are perfect for those times. The recipes can be found here!

This year, we found a great recipe for a Cranberry Oatmeal Cooke that we hope to try over Christmas holiday. Cranberries are one of our favorites and had been looking for a healthy and easy recipe. Here it is!

3/4 cup white whole wheat flour
1/4 tsp. allspice
1/4 tsp. baking soda

Beats Solo3 Wireless On-Ear Headphones (Product Review)

Hi Beautiful People,

Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday and had fun with your family and friends. And for those who didn’t get a chance to be with family or friends, remember you are never alone.

When I have free time I enjoy listening to music or an audio book with my headphones. I have Bose wireless headphones that I fall asleep while listening to music or spoken word because they are so comfortable. However, I recently had the opportunity to try the Beats Solo3 Wireless On-Ear Headphones, courtesy of Verizon Wireless.

  • The sounds is clear and good quality. Enjoying music will be a pleasure with the Beats and it offers good bass.

  • With Fast Fuel, 5 minutes of charging gives you 3 hours of playback when battery is low
  • Adjustable fit with comfort-cushioned ear cups made for everyday use
    Custom Comfort.

The on-ear, cushioned ear cups are adjustable so you can customize your fit for all-day listening comfort. The headphone’s fast-flowing curves and pivoting ear cups complete this natural fit, designed for optimal comfort and sound delivery. My ears felt a little snug when I listened for a long time, but maybe after extended use it will become more flexible.
  • Sleek, streamlined design that’s durable and foldable to go everywhere you do

Easy Connectivity
All I had to do was push in the on button under one of the ear cushions and held it for a couple of seconds and the headphones popped up on my phone or iPad and it would connect and I would click done and I was all set for listening to my favorite tunes.

*Battery power consumption depends on factors such as network configuration, carrier network and, signal strength.Wireless performance may be affected by nearby objects including walls, metal items, and other wireless devices. I would walk down the hall at work to see how for the wifi would go and it would disconnect but the reach was not suppose to be that long so that’s expected. When I was in my office it was hand free and I could go from my office to another office and it flowed with know interference.
Running with Beats
I run using the Spotify app music playing on my iPhone. The Beats Solo3 Wireless On-Ear Headphones are lightweight and do not feel like they weigh me done while I am exercising. I workout hard so listening to music that has clear sound is awesome.
Overall the Beats Solo3 Wireless On-Ear Headphones from Verizon would make a great gift to you, or from you for someone special. The Beats headphones retail for $299.99 with free shipping on VerizonWireless.com.

Thanksgiving Holiday Childhood Memories

Happy Thanksgiving Beautiful People!

My Grandmother’s house

When I think of the holidays, I think back to when I was a little girl spending time with my family. My grandmother was a wonderful cook and she would prepare a full spread with all the goodies. My mother was also a good cook, however, she spoke fondly of my grandmother staying up at night putting the dressing in the oven, taking it out after it was done and then putting the capon and goose in the oven. Although not necessarily at the same time.

What is capon, you say?

Capon 2014

Most of the time when I tell people that my Grandmother prepared capon for Thanksgiving they would not know what I was talking about. My mother prepared the traditional turkey, but a capon was just as familiar and not strange at all.
A capon is a castrated rooster that is fattened to make the meat more tender.
Growing up, I did not know what a capon was. It was not until I became in adult that I learned more about it. I knew the bird was a chicken; but that was all. After I was married, I went to my local Farmer’s Market and saw a fresh capon available. I felt nostalgia inside, thinking back to my childhood. I purchased it and prepared it for my husband who never had capon before. My husband really enjoyed it and when he asked me what type a bird it was. We were wondering, so we some research. When I found out what a capon was, it equipped me with knowledge. It kinda felt like I came to the table thinking I was eating something completely different than what I thought I was eating. It’s my choice if i want to continue to cook capon for Thanksgiving.  Really, people don’t realize how their meat comes to the table so it’s smart to be a wise consumer whether chicken, beef, fish, whatever. It’s really something to see that capon is now considered to be a delicacy and has been around since the middle ages.
Will I stop eating meat? No. Will I have capon every Thanksgiving as an adult? No. I have had it twice since my childhood.

Childhood Memories
I had great childhood memories of my Mother, my Dad, and I lived right around the corner from my Grandmother. I  spent practically all my Thanksgivings with her. She was a strong woman of faith and I can’t tell you how much wisdom and knowledge that she instilled in her children and in me. She was better than a cook. She was a diva chef who taught me many different recipes and cooking capon was a small facet of that. Thanksgiving also meant picking and cleaning collard greens, picking string beans and peeling potatoes. She would bake at least ten sweet potato pies and give out to her family to take home with them.

I will never forget my Grandmother taking the time to show me how to make biscuits in her kitchen. She worked as a cook in a high school cafeteria and it’s amazing how I will hear students talk about how they remembered Ms. Blue.

1967 Sumner year book

I would remember my mother, grandmother and I would go to the grocery store and the cashier would say look at the three generations. These memories are so precious to me because my Grandmother, my mother, and my Daddy are in heaven.  So take hold of those special memories and don’t take your family for granted. If you haven’t told them you love them call them up and tell them.

If you are by yourself on this Thanksgiving Day, remember that you are not alone. God is always with you and He loves you.
