Hello Beautiful People!
I have another recipe from my childhood in St. Louis. When I was a little child, my mother would would take me to Rinderers’ (a drug store that was formally in the Lou) or Woolworth’s (a five-and-dime store) for carmel popcorn or peanuts and jellybeans. At Rinderers’, my mother would order a half a pound of Spanish peanuts and jellybeans (I remember taking the hulls off). The man behind the counter would scoop the delicious combination in a paper bag. Mirrors were everywhere in that place, I felt I had to behave, however seeing those Spanish peanuts and jellybeans was worth it.
My mother never made peanuts and jellybeans. However when I was having lunch with my hubby, he told me that he never had the combination of the two. I started thinking of a recipe where I could share with him one of my favorite foodie experience as a child.
First, my hubby placed two cups of roasted peanuts (please check ingredients for msg and artificial preservatives) on a small baking sheet in our convection for ten minutes.
We didn’t have any Spanish nuts, so we used a roasted peanut instead. The smell reminded me of being a little child smell those delectable smells in the store, gosh the good memories.
After the peanuts are warmed, my hubby removed the peanuts from the oven and placed them in a brown paper bag.
While the peanuts are still warm, we added a 9 oz. bag of jelly beans to the bag and gently shook them together, mixing them together.
I asked my hubby to be the first to try it and he thought it was very tasty. He said that the combination of the peanuts warmed the jellybeans and the two melded together to form a sweet but salty, warm and gooey but crunchy treat. He couldn’t stop at just a couple. He kept reaching in the bag for more.
My hubby and I count calories, so we had only seven jellybeans with a handful of peanuts; and then put the rest in an air-tight container.
Always remember you can have a treat and maintain your fitness goals, the key is balance.
When talking with my hubby about the treat, he said that he had never had tried the combo before. Since he didn’t grow up in Saint Louis, it made me wonder if it was only a local treat? Do I have some foodies out there who shared in this experience?
Please let me know if you have tried this confectionary treat or if you tried my recipe.
Leave me a comment below, sharing your experience.
I most certainly remember this treat and only recently stopped making it on a regular basis in order to watch caloric intake and avoid a gout flare-up. This may have been a combo unique to St. Louis, as the folks in Chicago looked at me sort of weird,,,,until they sampled the tasty treat! BTW, they were familiar with peanuts and candy corn…
Hi Sandra,
So right, have to have balance. I understand.
This is my first time making this tasty treat because my hubby never had jellybeans with warm peanuts before. I haven’t had it since a child. Peanuts and candy corns sound good however it’s something so delicious about Peanuts and jellybeans.
Never had this before, but it looks great :))) xx
Please let me know if you try it.
Oh my…. The Sweet & Salty mix looks good JT! And its simple to make and not very fattening. I’m back on a healthy living kick as well, so this is perfect for when I crave something sweet. Like you said… moderation is key! I can’t wait to try it! xoxo… ThePecanTannedBeauty 🙂
Please let me know if you try it. That was the first time I had that in years. My hubby never had warm peanuts and jellybeans before.
I so remember this my mom would go get this too. I am from the STL and use to live around the corner from the drug store Rinderer’s. I loved eating these growing up. I was just telling my co-worker about this.
Jamie James this brings back such found memories. The peanuts smelled so good nice and warm.
My dad grew up in St. Louis and turned me on to this mix.
Wow, that’s cool.
The peanuts and jelly beans combo is definitely a STL thing. I also remember buying them at the candy counter in the basement of Sears. My friends also liked the Peanuts and Candy Corn.
I’ve been craving this for years. I’m from st.louis as well n I lived around the corner from this store too n as i stated I’ve been craving this taste for years n I finally got me some peanuts n jelly beans all I can say is umm umm good …😊
We created the recipe based on what I remembered as a kid. It’s great that you enjoyed the treats as much as I did.
Where you get the Spanish peanut from?
Hi Joyce,
Amazon has Spanish peanuts.
Here’s the link:
Spanish peanuts on Amazon
Also please try your local grocery store, or Trader Joes or Whole Foods to find Spanish peanuts. Please let me know if you try the recipe and what you think?
Yes, honey I am a native of STL. I press resume in Florida they know nothing about this wonderful creation. I turned my friends and hubby on to this. I have added more to my concoction. Praline pecans, chocolate almonds, cashews and sometimes I create other mixes that have yogurt raisins, cinnamon twist, M & M’s and so forth. My go to when I want a delicious snack. If you haven’t tried your missing out.
Hi Carlise,
That’s great you turned your hubby, family, and friends onto this delicious treat. I will definitely try your additions to this fabulous recipe. All your additions sound delicious. It’s amazing that people do not know about this great St. Louis sweet treat.
Just reading Maya Angelou and she mentioned this treat… I had to see it for myself. And now I know to warm the peanuts first 🙂
My husband’s nickname for me is peanut, I may start calling him jelly bean! Thanks!
PS. One of my favourite salty/sweet treats is hot buttered popcorn with peanut m&m’s.
My Grandfather introduced me to this delicious combination and I’ve never forgotten it! He was born in 1915 in Nebraska, but I’m not sure where he developed a taste for it.
Wow, that’s an awesome story thank you so much for sharing. Very cool that your Grandfather introduced you to it. That would be great to know how he started enjoying this delicious treat.
Loved this as a child. My brother would bring the combination for my mother and of course we helped her eat them. I think he got them from Woolworth or Sears in St. Louis, MO. I recently had a conversation with my sister about them and Googled today and found your story. No one here in Georgia ever heard of it. I miss that mix. Good memory! Thanks for the flashback.

I grew up in St Louis I lived walking distance from a shopping area in Welllston. My mom would take us to Woolworth eat lunch at the counters and we would get peanuts and jelly beans on the way out. It came up in a conversation today at work on a military installation and none of my coworkers had heard of it, of course I had to google 😝
I make it for people in Maryland. I’m from stl. Have you ever used spiced gumdrops instead? I’m having a hard time finding jellybeans lately
