Fashion Designer Exhibition Flurry: Is this the New Trend?

Designers present their creations on the runway. They become elevated to star status when a single piece is worn by a high profile socialite or celebrity. Have you ever wanted to learn more about your favorite designers or get a chance to see those runway designs for yourself? For the past several years, fashion designers are having their designs showcased not just on the runway, but also in museums all over the world.

How can I see the haute couture clothing of some of my favorite designers?

I recently read an article on  WWD (Source:May 26, 2011) that stated fashion designer exhibitions are popping up all over the place. Is this considered to be a trend that will go away in a few years? I do not think so. Trends are not long lasting and the fashion designer exhibitions tell their stories and get the long time fans entrenched in being up close to the unique creations.

In 2005, the Costume Institute displayed the Chanel Exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. That was more than five years ago. It is very evident that these exhibitions are not trends. Chanel is a true icon to say the least and to see an exhibition that would tell the story of such a force in fashion in no way could be a trend. And earlier this year, “Culture Chanel” was featured at the Modern Museum of Art in Shanghai (source: WWD, October 26, 2010). It appears that there is a constant interest in these type of museum exhibition.

WWD stated in its article that the Costume Institute’s “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” exhibition has been a great success (source:WWD May 27, 2011).  I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art website and the videos and pictures of the Alexander McQueen exhibit are breath taking.  Jill of Everything Just So says the exhibit has been extended and she gives some good advice for getting the full exhibit experience.

In a recent video interview on NYTimes Style,  Andrew Bolton, curator of the McQueen exhibition says that the visitor will be able to appreciate the “craftsmanship” and exquisite detail of the garments.

Some of us may not be able to wear the haute couture pieces right now; but we sure can get pretty close to the see the intricacies of the garment.

The Dior Inspiration exhibition is currently on display in Moscow, Russia.  The exhibition is magnificent and jaw dropping. It makes me want to drop everything and catch a flight to Moscow just to see the exhibition. I am an avid admirer of Christian Dior — the clothes and the fragrances. The video below is from the Grand Opening of the Dior Inspiration. Check out www.inspirationdior.com to get more up and close information about this awesome exhibit.

I do not see a trend here. I see a wave of fashion designer exhibitions that not only show us beautiful designs; but educating us on the hard work it took to design, cut, mold fabric and create lines for the runway.

The Fashion World of Jean-Paul Gaultier, From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk is showing at the Montreal Museum of Fine Art right now.  If you are in the Montreal area; go see it because who knows, it may give you inspiration.

Learning more about designers through exhibitions is not a trend because we are educating ourselves to become more knowledgable.  If we happen to own one of those creations it makes the piece much more memorable because there is a story behind it.

Do you consider fashion designer exhibitions a current trend?
Let me know what you think.

A Pop of Floral!

This is one of my favorite dresses.  This dress works for all occasions so it can be dressed up or down. I have worn this dress with flats, heels and wedges.  All the above works with this dress. The colors in the dress are gray, green, yellow and black.  So many different color accessories to change the look of the dress, it’s like a chameleon.

Either I saw a bug or looking at a bird in this photo.  Looks like I am in deep thought.  Have a wonderful week everybody.

Sales on the Oasis of the Seas

A Rose is A Rose

I hope everyone is having a fabulous day!  Here in my neck of the woods we are having a break from the heat and having gorgeous fall like temperatures so I am enjoying it while it last. The Rose above is from a vine on a trellis in my back yard.  I have had those roses for a long time and they still are a coming out strong and have a light perfume scent to them.

I was remembering that I had been told before I went on a cruise that there would be sales so I was getting ready. After going on the cruise  I learned that you really have to be on the look out because some of the sales are on a certain day and time and only last maybe a couple of hours.

I was able to find a couple of cuff watches for $9 or $10 each and some pashminas for $10 each so I bought some nice items at great prices.

Getting ready for the watch sale in my Evan Picone dress

The picture below is a watch sale with tons of people. The sale was $89.99-$99.99 priced watches for $19.95.  Yes, 19.95!  Is this a television commercial, no it’s a watch sale on a cruise ship. The watches were in blue and gold box gift sets that may include a necklace and a bracelet for the women or a money clip and pen for the men.

Watch Sale in the Promenade on the Oasis the Sea

When my hubby and I first stood in line it may have been five people in front of us but when it got close to 2pm (the time of the sale) the line was really long.  The cruise staff for the sale asked if everyone could please be civil and no pushing and shoving.  I enjoy sales but will draw the line on getting in front of someone or cutting them off that is so rude.  If I do not get something I want then it wasn’t meant for me anyway.  I will not lower myself to standards of stepping on people or jetting in front of them so I can be there first. I think this behavior is crazy and uncivilized.  People this is only stuff, material possessions that fade away over time. I digress, sorry for ranting but this really gets to me.

Well for the most part people were civilized when the sale started. Some people grabbed ten watch gift sets for birthday and Christmas gifts. My hubby and I picked out a couple nice ones.  I will point them out in my future outfit posts.

Did you notice in the picture that there were quite a few men getting in on this sale.  Men love fashion sales too.   I think that’s a big myth that men don’t like to shop, maybe some don’t but some do.  My hubby likes to shop and he likes to shop with me.  It’s so much fun. When we met he really didn’t know a lot about putting colors together and working your wardrobe but now he likes to dress up and loves shoes (especially boots).

So cool to catch men shopping on camera.

Tips to look out for when on a Cruise ship

1. Day of the sale (very important)
2. Time of the sale
3. Location of the sale
4. Quality of the merchandise ( feel it, look at it, check it)
5. Keep your receipt-I had bought a watch that looked fine in the box but when I put it on in my room I noticed it was scratched.  I was able to exchange it for another watch.

Bonus:While at sea merchandise is duty and tax free so you may can find some good deals.

Dresses are So Cool for Summer.. Loving the Paisley!

When I had taken the pictures with this dress, it had rained so much that day. With all the rain we have been getting lately, a pretty dress brings a smile to my face.

Loving this Blue Paisley print in this dress, it’s fresh and so chic. Another added benefit with this dress is that it’s made out of cotton. Since cotton is a natural fiber, it is so breathable in the Summer time, especially on the those hot and humid days.
I bought this dress from Chadwicks.com for $17.00 after all my coupons and discounts. Chadwicks has been a great place to find awesome dresses especially if you do not want to spend a whole lot of money. Most dresses start at $40.00 and the catalogue often come with discount coupons for 10, 20 or sometimes 30 0r 40 percent off your favorite item, bringing the down even more.  Yeah, you can say that’s pretty awesome. I know if I would search for a similar dress at Macy’s, it would start at $85.00 or more.

3 Benefits of wearing dresses in the Summer

  • Cool
  • Cute
  • -Comfortable

An added bonus is that the dress is appropriate for all facets of my life: I can wear it to work, to church or on a date with my hubby. I cannot think of a place where I would not wear this dress.   I am sure to get my moneys worth and compliments!
