There’s been a lot of controversy over the Alexander McQueen dress that First Lady Michelle Obama wore at a White House formal dinner hosting Chinese President Hu Jintao. Yes, it was a European designer and the United States is trying to make ways to get the clothing industry back with so many jobs have been outsourced to foreign countries. In the past, Mrs. Obama has spotlighted up-and-coming American fashion designers. However, the remarks made by Sally Singer of T Magazine for the New York Times was completely unnecessary and out of line. Point blank.
On February 3rd Sally Singer said on MSNBC’s Morning Joe show that the dress did not fit or flatter Mrs. Obama well and that she was to old for the dress and it should of been worn by a younger diminutive woman. Younger and diminutive! OMG! Did I say OMG? Yes, OMG!
The video below spotlights Sally Singer’s opinion about the Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen dress for the first part of the video. It then delves off into men’s leggings.

The First Lady looks awesome in the dress and for Ms. Singer to say that Mrs. Obama is too old to wear the dress is not only a harsh remark to all women over the age of 40. You mean to tell me that an over 40 diva cannot wear an off-the-shoulder, full-length dress? That is simply preposterous.
Diminutive
The First Lady is statuesque and holds her own in this dress. Why would she need to be diminutive? Why are we putting women in a box to be regurgitated out to be this specific size, height and shape?
Ms. Singer needs to think before she speaks because I noticed that no one in the video spot agreed with her. She was all by herself with that comment. When will we, as a society, feel freedom in being happy with what ever shape or size a woman is? To put a woman in a box to say she needs to look like this and be this height or weight continues the stereotyping and size bashing.
Enough is Enough…..
well said 🙂 I think she looks stunning. Some people should think before opening their mouths xx
Thank you Fuyume. Mrs. Obama looks fabulous. I agree wholeheartedly that Ms. Singer needs to keep silent.
I suspect Miss Know-Nothing doesn’t think before she speaks, and probably knows little about fashion. If design houses were to only allow the young to wear their frocks, they would have been out of business. I am a personal fan of McQueen, and for the record, Obama looks steller in the gown. Diminunitive? Tell that to the amazons who are modelling the dresses on the runway. Sheesh.
It is possible that Michelle Obama would have shown great symbolic support for American industry by wearing an American designer. The irony is not lost on me that we usually ship the manufacturing out abroad anyways.
the Citizen Rosebud
You are right that it would of shown symbolism for Mrs. Obama to wear an American design but it’s not a lot of truly American made lines these days.
My hubby saw a label in an outfit that said Made in America but of imported fabric. So it’s not truly made in the US. The irony of it all.
I think she looks amazing! The cut of this dress actually really suits her and I think a vibrant colour like this looks fantastic against her dark skin.
I love that she’s adventurous with her style and doesn’t just play safe.

Hi Blah Blah Becky!
Thank you for your comment. I am glad you also think that Mrs. Obama looks great in the dress. I really like how she steps out of the box.

Thank you Monique for stopping by. I’m so glad you feel the same way. Mrs. Obama does look simply smashing in that dress.
hahaha, that chick sure did make herself look ridiculous. Michelle Obama has never looked better if you ask me, this is risk taking at its finest: beautiful, but out of the box.
I love the dress. It might not be my favorite on her, but she looks stunning in practically everything. Some people are simply jealous that they can’t pull of true style.
Hi Lisa,
I do think that when it comes to Michelle Obama that some people are jealous.
I just found you through IFB. I can’t believe Sally Singer said this about Michelle Obama and the McQueen dress! I usually agree with Sally’s opinions but I think she got it wrong on this one. Mrs. O looks smokin’ hot in this dress and I would argue that her wonderful height is exactly what a boldly printed dress like this one needs. As for not wearing an American designer, I love that she wears a little bit of everybody.
I have a theory on why Michelle picked McQueen. Anna Wintour was at the dinner Michelle Obama wore this dress to and may have suggested wearing McQueen because the Costume Institute at the Met in NYC will be featuring Alexander McQueen this May in a retrospective. So choosing this dress may be Michelle’s way of telling Sarah Burton to keep the house of McQueen going strong.
Thank you for reading my post.
You have a good theory I could see Mrs. Obama wearing the dress as a way of telling Sarah Burton to keep the house of McQueen going strong.
Thank you for writing this. I think Michelle looks amazing in that dress, it suits her very well. I agree with what others say, if designers only allowed young and diminutive girls to wear their designs they would struggle a lot.
I’m glad nobody agreed with her, I like to think that means we’re advancing away from the catagorising of women in general to a more free and accepting society.
Personally, I think you need some age and curves to pull this dress off. She looks amazing, and it wouldn’t look as good on a younger, skinnier version.

Sounds like the journalist just wanted a controvesial story, I don’t think anyone can deny she looks amazng and really her husband is the politician she should be able to wear what ever designer she wants with out being accused of lack of support for US designers!!
Michelle Obama looks amazing and this dress is soooooo age appropriate! The cut is classic and the colors are elegant. And she is in such great shape and thankfully not a size 0! Thanks for sharing! Love, A
I almost think the dress works well on her because she’s so tall, I feel like a more “diminutive” woman would be overwhelmed by the fabric and even the colour. I think the colour is gorgeous with her skin tone, and the neckline and sleeves of the dress really compliment her amazing arms.
Bravo! Well said, I couldn’t agree more. She looks stunning in this dress and is an ambassador for women in their 40’s who celebrate being stylish. I can’t stand it when people make these kind of comments – like we should all put it away if we are not in our twenties anymore. Congrats on making LALM too – well deserved!
I think she looks stunning. We should love who we are and show it off. I think she did a brilliant job of it in this dress. I mean, could you see Kristen Stewart in this?! Everyone would be saying she looked too old in it. I think she was just picking to be contrary. That seems to be a trend in the media now-a-days. For one, I think she killed the look.
